Unternehmensgeschichte der Mainlab GmbH

Mainlab looks back upon a company history lasting for now almost 15 years. An era characterized by technical progress in the IT sector, an era that enabled Mainlab to establish itself in this sector and to gather significant experiences.

The beginnings of Mainlab date back to the year 1995. Today's world wide web already existed in its basic features, but had not yet developed to a mass medium and certainly did not control daily life to today's extend. In the following years, Mainlab was able to keep ahead of the market in terms of IT concepts and strategies. With a steady expansion of all business areas, the foundations for today's services were layed.

A short description of our business areas and services throughout the past years:

1995

Development of a search engine for educational purposes

In 1995, today's management team devised a search engine for educational purposes. Internet content was filtered with a focus for use in school and university. With financial support of two companies, this software was successfully put into operation.

1997

Operation of IT equipment, servers and network management

Knowledge derived from operating own IT equipment was passed on to various companies. Servers were colocated in data centers and supplied with highly available and redundant IP connectivity - one of today's main business areas of Mainlab.

1999

Web Application Development:
Strategies, Consulting and Design for Internet Communities

In the following years, all colocation and connectivity services were expanded. Mainlab supported companies to develop internet communities and provided general strategies and knowledge in terms of software development. All services were specifically focused on compliance with network resources.

2001

Foundation of Mainlab GmbH

All existing projects and companies were united in 2001, resulting in the foundation of Mainlab GmbH. The registration in Frankfurt's commercial register took place in March. That year, Mainlab also gained the status of a LIR (Local Internet Registry), by becoming a member of the RIPE NCC, the issuing agency for IP address space in Europe. Also in terms of network management, Mainlab was able to break new grounds.

2002

rackbase.de – the colocation- and connectivity product website of Mainlab

Colocating IT equipment of any size in modern data centers and providing redundant connectivity is one of Mainlab's main business areas nowadays. All internet offers for these services were brought together in 2002 and were labeled by the product name "rackbase.de".

In June of 2002, Mainlab selected the modern data center facilities of Redbus Interhouse in Frankfurt's Lyoner Street as primary colocation site.

2004

Foundation of Bellaxa Networks GmbH

Increased data transit led Mainlab to the decision to source parts of the network management out. Bellaxa Networks GmbH, a subsidiary of Mainlab and a leading server and web services provider, was founded for this purpose and quickly had excellent connections to leading carrier networks and network exchanges available.

2005

Launching colocation facilities in Amsterdam

Amsterdam was the chosen site by Mainlab to operate colocation facilities outside of Germany. All servers co-located in Amsterdam were, in addition to upstreams on site, directly linked to Mainlab's national German IP Backbone in Frankfurt and to all connected carrier networks and exchange points, providing superb connectivity options.

2007

Hardware Upgrades, Bandwidth Upgrades,
Launching Mainlab Office in Frankfurt's Lyoner Street

The first half of 2007 is marked with comprehensive hardware acquisitions for backbone operations. At the same time, bandwidth to DTAG (German Telecom) and the DE-CIX was upgraded to 10 Gbit/s each.

In May Mainlab opened a new office in Frankfurt's Lyoner Street within the FRA-1 data center compound.

2008

Launching data center locations FRA-3 and FRA-4

Due to the steadily growing demand for high-end colocation facilities, Mainlab put the FRA-3-location in Gutleutstrasse into operation. In November 2008 a location in Kleyerstrasse followed for dedicated racks. The multiple locations in Frankfurt offer superb opportunities in terms of strategies for geographical redundancy.

2008 is also marked by the implementation of various additional managed services.

2009

Virtual Data Center

The year 2009 was marked by virtualization services. A testing phase lasting over the previous 2 years came to an end and all highly available virtual data center services were successfully put into operation. Virtualization takes advantage of the steadily growing performance of modern IT systems. Today, a single application rarely uses the full capacity of a server system. These additional costs can be avoided. We offer you a fully virtualized data center environment with the same performance as conventional data centers – at reduced costs.

2010

Cloud Computing - maincloud.de

2010 marks the start into the cloud-age. "Performance on demand" - with our new product line MainCloud (maincloud.com), we offer scalable and highly available server capacities with flexible accounting options.
